Jeremy Leipzig: Reproducible Research Tools Presentation

On October 25th, Jeremy Leipzig, Software Developer and IS PhD student presented research to the Drexel GIS Users Group about Reproducible Research Tools, including:

– Software dependency management using Conda
– Pipeline frameworks Snakemake and Nextflow
– Quilt “data as a dependency” framework
– Live web-enabled Jupyter notebooks with Binder

The First Annual Alice B. Kroeger Spotlight on STEM Librarianship Event

Drexel’s Metadata Research Center, The University of Pennsylvania’s Biomedical Library, the Drexel University Library, and Archives Student Association, and the Philadelphia chapter of the Special Libraries Association are co-hosting the first annual Alice B. Kroeger Spotlight on STEM Librarianship event. The event includes a panel presentation on STEM librarianship, a tour of the Biomedical Library’s 3D Printing Laboratory, and a light reception.

2018 Joint PI Meeting: NSF BIGDATA and Big Data Hubs & Spokes

The National Science Foundation held their 2018 Joint PI Meeting: NSF BIGDATA and Big Data Hubs & Spokes, from June 20-22nd, in Alexandria, Virginia.

Jane Greenberg gave a lightning talk on current progress with the data sharing spoke project, “A Licensing Model and Ecosystem for Data Sharing.”

Graduate Research Student Famien Koko also presented his poster, entitled “Differential Privacy in Licensing Model and Ecosystem for Data Sharing.”

Bio: Jean Godby is a Senior Research Scientist at OCLC. She has spent over twenty-five years exploring data-oriented research interests in library metadata standards, schema mapping and transformation, exchange between libraries and publishers, knowledge discovery, and new models of resource description. Jean currently leads a team of researchers and engineers on projects featuring data science and linked data. Jean has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Ohio State University.

Metadata Mixer: Data Citation Metadata Elements

Megan Force, Editor of Clarivate Analytics, discussed the challenges of data citation accuracy for the Data Citation Index, a scholarly research database on the Web of Science platform. Significant differences between digital research objects and other more traditional forms of scholarly output are leading to new interpretations of citation metadata elements such as author, publisher, version, and date of publication.

Northeast Big Data Innovation Hub (NEBDIH) 2018 Summit

MRC members participated in Northeast Big Data Innovation Hub (NEBDIH) 2018 Summit at Columbia University. IS Doctoral Student Adam Johs and Graduate Student Assistant Liz Jenkins were recipients of NEBDIH student travel awards, and assisted with recording session activities both in the AM general session as well as the afternoon Ethics and Data Literacy breakout meeting. Rosina Weber, who has expertise is in Artificial intelligence, text analytics, and machine learning, attended the full day summit, including the afternoon breakout session targeting Health data.
